In the classical period, especially in ancient Greece, the snake was linked to occulted knowledge, to divination and to the oracle “Pythia”. The body of the snake was considered remedies of diseases. Aesculapius, who holds a stake with a coiled snake, became the emblem of medicine and pharmacy. In Christian iconography, this allegory is linked to Eva’s temptation. The snake with the toad is bound to luxury and death, but in the western funeral iconography is the symbol of medical science.
