A project to promote the Monumental cemetery was created in 1999 by the municipality of Bologna in collaboration with two departments: “Lavori Pubblici” (Public Works) and “Nuove istituzioni museali” (New museum institutions). The first one deals with cataloguing the artistic heritage; the second one was also created for the project “Museo della Certosa”.
One of the first operational aspects that had been put in place was about the promotion of the cultural heritage, through some events and guided tours. The first musical event was held in July 2002, while since 2006 a program of guided tours has been taking place thanks to the Museum and other tourist guides’ associations. Since 2009 the Civic Museum of Italian Risorgimento has been in charge of the protection and promotion of the Certosa, thus it can be included among the most important local museums and in can carry out workshops for schools or tours for blind and partially sighted people. Since 2009, the summer program (May-September) suggests a vast number of events ranging from plays to day/evening-night guided tours, from lectures to team tours with the purpose of getting to know the most majestic monumental complex in the city. The place’s awesomeness offers a precious frame that includes various settings, where it is possible to admire a specific catalogue of languages and artistic stiles. This catalogue goes from the Neo-classicism (through Romanticism and Liberty) to the Classicism of the 20th century. The calendar begins with the annual “Settimana alla scoperta dei cimiteri europei” (A week dedicated to discover the European cemeteries) promoted by ASCE (Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe).
Since 2009 the summer planning has been created by the “Istituzione Bologna Musei /Museo Civico del Risorgimento” (Institution Museums of Bologna / Civic Museum of the Risorgimento) with a lot of culture realities, including: Associazione Amici della Certosa, Associazione Culturale Didasco, Associazione Culturale Youkali, Associazione Culturale Rimachèride, Associazione Decadance - Opera sublime, Associazione Percorso della memoria rossoblu e Centro Bologna Clubs, Associazione P.G.M.
